REVIEW: ST. VINCENT

stvincent

If there are saints among us, St. Vincent, led by the renowned Bill Murray, has earned it as far as films go. Murray plays Vincent, a down on his luck curmudgeon in the midst of losing his house, owing money to a loan shark (Terrence Howard) and canoodling with Daka, a pregnant Russian stripper (Naomi […]

REVIEW: THE GRAND BUDAPEST HOTEL

The-Grand-Budapest-Hotel-Movie-2014-Images

The Grand Budapest Hotel is vintage Wes Anderson in more ways than one. A laundry list of A-list actors (many of which are seen in other Anderson movies) in odd rolls, trains, motorcycles, wealthy back-drops, death and signature Anderson cinematography. It was an absolute blast to watch as are all of his films.

REVIEW: INSIDE LLEWYN DAVIS

inside-llewyn-davis-oscar-isaac-garrett-hedlund

If you don’t mind a movie with no clear finish line, Inside Llewyn Davis, the latest from the Coen brothers, is for you. I’ve heard people who hate it. I’ve heard people who love it. Me, I guess I’m somewhere in between and leaning more towards the latter. Great soundtrack. Great cinematography. John Goodman has […]

2014 POLAR PLUNGE IN ASBURY PARK

polar

This year was my first experience with a Polar Plunge. No, I didn’t go in. With my years of surfing, I have have plenty of cold water experience, so I watched this one behind the camera on the beach. I attended because my wife, Kathleen, participated with some of her students from the Red Bank […]

REVIEW: MUD

Mud

Mud made me feel like a kid again. When you watch a lot of movies, sometimes you forget to let yourself get lost in the magic of cinema, but director Jeff Nichols was able to provide a brief reprieve from our everyday lives and transport us back to childhood. With comparisons to The Adventures of […]

REVIEW: THE PLACE BEYOND THE PINES

The-Place-Beyond-The-Pines-poster

Derek Cianfrance’s newest cinematic adventure, The Place Beyond The Pines, spins a tragic tale of karma, regret and the ripple effect of decisions. Schenectady, NY provides a picturesque backdrop for the drama that reunites him with Ryan Gosling who starred opposite Michelle Williams in his last picture Blue Valentine. Gosling plays Luke, a slightly more […]

SEARCHING FOR SUGARMAN OPENS TONIGHT (3/1) AT THE SHOWROOM

searchingforsugarman2

This film will make you cry. There, I said it. And I admit I did shed a tear or two while watching “Searching for Sugarman”. But like some seedy massage parlors, this one comes with a happy ending. The story goes like this. Sixto Rodriguez was a musician from Detroit in the early 1970s. Some thought […]

REAL LIFE EMOJIS BY MOLLY MULSHINE

emojis

OK, if you don’t know what an emoji is, they are those annoying little emoticon picture characters people send via text message. My 35 year old brother loves to send them to me. And while emojis should probably never be sent by anyone over the age of 16, there is something strangely amusing about them. I probably laugh […]
