20141027_California14_01-90

No one thing should define any human being. But if you had to choose what incarnates Shawn Zappo, surfing and yoga would be high on the list. The former Anchor contributor, who now writes for the San Francisco based surfandabide.com, combined both of these passions on a recent surfing adventure along the west coast of California.

TOM PETRIKEN: MUTANT EXPERIMENTS

Petriken-by-Mike-Incitti

This past summer was a bummer in the way of quality surf. The miserable conditions gave professional surfer and VW van enthusiast, Tom Petriken, ample time to test out his Roberts mutant. The mutant is made for small, mushy and miserable summertime conditions. Tom put the board good use, ripping knee-high dribble, and getting some […]

Bradley Beach surfer and artist Ronnie Jackson first made a name for himself in the local surf community with his natural ability in the water and his hardcore approach to wave riding. SUMMER MAKES WAY FOR AUTUMN

Shawn-Zappo-sliding-in-the-Golden-Hour

“Summer ends, and Autumn comes, and he who would have it otherwise would have high tide always and a full moon every night.” -Hal Borland It was a cruel summer for surfers. Like many I thought the Andrea swell that hit in early June, coupled with the amazing winter of surf we had prior, meant […]

THE WILD CALL OF THE SEA

Mikey-Hughes

But more wonderful than the lore of old men and the lore of books is the secret lore of ocean. -H. P. Lovecraft Surfers are drawn to the ocean by what seems to be a deep rooted yet undefinable connection. The roar of a building swell summons the surfer not unlike a lover beckoning to […]

SITTING, WAITING, THINKING

Sitting

“For whatever we lose (like a you or a me), It’s always our self we find in the sea.” ― E.E. Cummings Watching the waves as they caressed the jetty rocks, I waxed my board, then quickly ran down the beach. As I reached the shore line I jumped into the water, feverishly paddling into […]

STRANDED ON THE SIDE OF THE ROAD WITH THOUGHTS OF SURFING

Shawn-Zappo-2

It’s hellishly hot. The air is thick and sticky. The humidity seems like sap dripping down the side of a tree. There is just enough of a slight breeze out of the west to make the heat temporarily bearable. I’m sitting in my car, broken down on the side of the road, awaiting the arrival […]

AN INTERVIEW WITH SURF PHOTOGRAPHER CHRISTOR LUKASIEWICZ

3

Red Bank resident Christor Lukasiewicz knows what he’s doing behind a camera. After Hurricane Sandy ripped us a new ass, our affiliated arts and culture website The Anchor (asburyanchor.com) had a feature of his post-storm surf photography which caught my attention. Christor’s work is uniquely captivating and I quickly reached out to him about shooting […]

Glide featured a clean, visual aesthetic, with a boutique set up and laid back vibe. They also housed and featured a variety […]

SUMMER SURF: LAST WEEKEND’ S ANDREA SWELL

Wave_Saturday

Many times the winters in New Jersey can feel long, depressing and as if they will last for eternity. Did I forget to mention frigid and chilling to the bone? Well yeah, it’s as cold as a witches wrinkled and deflated tit too. But for surfers the darkened clouds of winter always have a silver […]

SHARING SURFING: TEACHING THE BASICS OF WAVE RIDING

zaplessons4

Summer will be upon us in a matter of weeks. Are you ready for crowded line-ups, lifeguard whistle noise pollution, knee high dribblers and beach umbrella madness? Don’t forget that guy, the one you haven’t seen all winter; well now he’s back in the water. Not only is he in the water, he’s yelling at […]

A FOGGY SURF SESSION IN OCEAN GROVE

Colin-McNamara--Frontside-Indy-Air--

When I checked the surf yesterday, the sky was grey, a layer of dense cloud cover obscured the sun. I drove around for a bit, trying to find a wave worth riding. Most spots were looking mushy and weak. Minimal spring south swells with light onshore winds aren’t my choice conditions, especially after a winter […]

CHILLING OUT WITH SOME SPRING TUBES

Bear-Dude-Tube--Photo-2

On March 20th the Sun crossed the celestial equator going northward; then rose exactly due east and set exactly due west. This is called the Vernal Equinox, or simply, the first day of spring. Although we are midway through May, symptoms of the winter season have been lingering. For most these wintery remnants are hanging […]

SURFING AND THE DISSOLUTION OF EGO

Photo-1

“Do not overlook the truth that is right before you. Study how water flows in a valley stream, smoothly and freely between the rocks. Also learn from holy books and wise people. Everything – even mountains, rivers, plants and trees should be your teacher” – Morihei Ueshiba The ocean is both a liberating and humbling […]

AN INTERVIEW WITH SURFBOARD SHAPER CHRIS CHAIZE

Chaize--Shaping--Adam-Lindstrom-Photography--(4)

ASBURY PARK – I first met Chris Chaize about 4 years ago in Asbury Park. We were surfing a nice hollow right hander that was coming in off an anonymous jetty. This was one of the winters in Asbury when there would only be about four guys in the water. Hardcore surfers trading off perfect […]

PUT SOME SOUL IN THAT BOWL

Tom_Petriken

Put some soul in that bowl, it’s 420! Now don’t get it twisted. I can’t stand to hear some goofy pseudo hippy babble about “420”, the unofficial holiday of stoners that happened this past Saturday, April 20. So please don’t picture some dude sitting on the couch, twirling his stomach hair, while he’s blazed out […]

WINTER’S LAST COLD KISS: PHOTOS BY CHRISTOR LUKASIEWICZ

3-19_#1-(2)

The winter of 2013 has been near epic for surfers here in New Jersey. Graced with numerous overhead, thunderous barreling days, we have a stockpile of mental tube shots to last us well into hurricane season. But we won’t be waiting till August for more solid waves. Spring is one of my favorite times of […]

FROM THE LIPS OF CRESTING WAVES

Shawn-Zappo-1

“Born in the water, cries out like a child, when powerful and brilliant he wishes to enjoy heaven…” -RG VEDA. 9th Mandala, IX. When I was a kid there was something about what was happening on land that made me feel out of place, confused, depressed, and many times lost. I cannot pinpoint exactly what it […]

THE PSYCHOLOGY OF SURFING WITH DR. BILL ROSENBLATT

drbill-c

Dr. Bill Rosenblatt is the real deal. A psychologist and surfer from Loch Arbor, Rosenblatt has been riding waves since 1963. For those not good at numbers that’s 50 years to be exact. You can bet this guy has a story or two to tell, in and out of the water. Rosenblatt is also one smart […]
