REVIEW: INSIDE LLEWYN DAVIS

If you don’t mind a movie with no clear finish line, Inside Llewyn Davis, the latest from the Coen brothers, is for you. I’ve heard people who hate it. I’ve heard people who love it. Me, I guess I’m somewhere in between and leaning more towards the latter. Great soundtrack. Great cinematography. John Goodman has a role. What’s not to like about that?

The story goes something like this: Inside Llewyn Davis (played by Oscar Isaac who’s a dead ringer for local Asbury musician Colin Carhart) follows a week in the life of a young folk singer as he navigates the Greenwich Village folk scene of 1961. Llewyn Davis is at a crossroads. Guitar in tow, huddled against the unforgiving New York winter, he is struggling to make it as a musician against seemingly impossible obstacles – some of them of his own making. Living at the mercy of both friends and strangers, scaring up what work he can find, Llewyn’s misadventures take him from the basket houses of the village to an empty Chicago club – on an odyssey to audition for music mogul Bud Grossman – and back again.

This film is depressing. It’s dark on many levels. Really, its the cliché story of the typical struggling and starving artist. Tons of talent, but just not enough to get over the edge. Sleeping on friends couches. Going back to mom for money when you’re down and out. Picking up any odd gig to get you to the next one. Dreams of making it beat down time and time again. I mean every time you think Davis might get lucky, the opposite happens. I guess the moral of this one is to just keep scrapping when fate is telling you otherwise. Chase you passions and dreams no matter how insurmountable the obstacles. Or just give up and get a job at Walmart.
