Ronnie Wood is a rock and roll legend. The Rolling Stones guitarist is also a painter and he’ll be showing off some of his artistic chops in an exclusive one-man exhibition at art629 on Cookman Ave. in Asbury Park beginning on June 1st. A reception will be held on Saturday, June 15th from 7 to 10pm. Wood however will not be there. Sorry to burst your bubble.

Wood’s work tends to revolve around his life in the music world. He has captured countless rock and roll legends in a variety of mediums including Jimi Hendrix, Chuck Berry, Jim Morrison, Elvis Presley, Bob Marley, Eric Clapton, John Lennon and Madonna. Many are friends and former colleagues which makes Wood’s work all the more appealing. There is a true connection between artist and subject.

For Wood, music and art are like peas and carrots and the same intensity displayed on stage is seen in his art. When he’s not painting his musician buddies, he prefers to paint the views from his farm and the horses in his stable back in Ireland. It’s the perfect setting for working on future projects and reflecting on the past and present. Music and art run through the veins of the Wood family. Born in Middlesex, England, Wood studied art at Ealing College of Art in London before jumping on stage with Jeff Beck’s band Faces. Ultimately he ended up with rock and rolls most prolific band of all time, the Rolling Stones. I mean these guys are half dead and still playing into their 70s. That’s dedication.

Even through the extensive touring and hectic life of being on the road all the time, Wood always found a way to keep painting and drawing. And while he is most known as a musician, it is just as natural to find him with a pencil as with a guitar, drawing portraits of contemporaries and finding inspiration from his musical influences.

While in the US in the early 80’s, Ronnie produced his first prints – three woodcuts and a series of monotypes. At that point he wasn’t exactly an accomplished printmaker and seized the opportunity in 1987 to work for several months at a professional printmaking studio in England.

From that moment on he has devoted to a substantial amount of his free time to printmaking, producing a wide body of images using various techniques like etching, dry-point, screen-print and digital.

Wood’s work has been seen at the Museum of Modern Art in Sao Paulo, Brazil and he’s had numerous one-man exhibitions in North and South America, Asia and throughout Europe. Add Asbury Park to that list.
