We love downtown Asbury Park’s Parlor Gallery. Why? Because they don’t mind showing a little tits and ass from time to time. In a country filled with religious nuttery and sexual conservatism, we need more venues like Parlor Gallery to let it all hang out, literally.

Plus it’s always fun to ruffle some panties. We love it when we hear of people who walk by Parlor, or some other gallery in town, and get offended by something they see in the window. They bitch and moan about how their son or daughter had to endure the sight of a bare breast on canvas….or something like that. If you want family friendly, go to Ocean Grove. Please, do us all a favor.

I mean seriously, for a country as “free and open” as we are here in America, we’re painfully deep in the closet when it comes to sex, and in the case of Parlor Gallery, erotic art.

So what exactly defines erotic art? Well if you’re looking at a Webster’s, its literature or art dealing with sexual love. Simple enough. Parlor Gallery celebrates this art form each year by curating a show dedicated solely to this ideal.

With that said the 4th annual erotic arts exhibition, LINGER, opens this Saturday, June 8th with a reception from 7 to 11p.m. The show will feature all types of erotic art in the forms of photography, video, painting, conceptual and sculpture. We suggest leaving the kids at home. That is unless you want them to grow up with an open mind, an appreciation for the human body and a healthy sex life.

Artists included in this years’ exhibition include some familiar and not so familiar faces; Joseph Walton, Ellen Stagg, Hiroshi Kumagai, Matthew Bone, Erin M, Riley, Lenny Campello, Mariel Clayton, Wonderpuss Octopus, Tine Helleshøj, Corwin Prescott, Steven Guermeur, RUGMAN, Chas Ray Krider, Derek Woods, Daniel Belardinelli Paul Romano, Jeff Faerber & Derek Gores.

LINGER features  several artists who have participated in Parlor’s past erotic art shows.  One such pair is Ellen Stagg and Hiroshi Kumagai.  These two artists are long time friends who recently collaborated on a new body of work inspired by Stagg’s Lomokino films featuring models from Mariel Claytonher website, staggstreet.com. Hiroshi created his works by taking still shots from these films and reinterpreting them on vinyl.

Other highlights from the show include photographer Mariel Clayton’s dioramas of Japanese miniature dolls whose naughty behaviors are captured on film. Wonderpuss Octopus’ creates bejeweled and ornamental dildos. Matthew Bone paints luscious ladies and Derek Woods photographs tattooed beauties in softly erotic poses.

LINGER will linger until July 8th. Parlor Gallery is located at 717 Cookman Ave. on the arts block in Asbury Park. For more info call 732-869-0606 or visit www.parlor-gallery.com.
